These "Tamang thangkas" are country cousins to the much more formal thangkas of central Tibet. Like the better known Sherpas the Tamangs migrated from the Tibetan plateau into Nepal several hundred years ago. They still speak a language of Tibetan origin and practice Tibetan Buddhism. These thangkas were all collected in Nepal from Tamang or Sherpa people. While they reflect a less sophisticated painting style they nevertheless have great charm and presence.
All these thangkas are in their original mounts. In the image pages we give first the dimension of the mounted thangka followed by the dimension of the painting alone.
