Jewelry from Nepal: Individual Pieces
The tengura necklace
such as this one is worn for protection. Composed of multiple silver bezels enclosing a piece of bone and strung on double
cords, they are worn by both women and children. They are believed to keep evil spirits from rising to the head.
The elements in this tengura are particularly small and delicate. It has been restrung in the original manner. As a result, none of the elements is missing including the
bone pieces. It closed by means of a resin covered knot on one end which fits into a buttonhole on the other end of
the cord. Overall length is 23". The length covered by the silver elements is 14-1/2 inches.
