Jewelry from Nepal: Individual Pieces

We remember when these necklaces first appeared on the market in Kathmandu. Most of the local dealers had never seen them before. That is because they are worn by the Rana Tharu of far western Nepal, far from Kathmandu.

Two fabric cords hold all the component pieces of this necklace into a coherent whole. The shaping comes from the spacing of the bottom of the top elements by the dangling pieces along the outer edge. Sixty-seven separate elements make up this necklace.

The metal is white metal or low alloy silver.
