These panels are newly painted. They might look old but they are not old.
We want to emphasize that fact. For years we have been railing against the newly painted "Tibetan furniture" coming out of China. Our biggest complaint is with the unethical nature of hiding this fact from the consumer. Almost as troubling is that many of the designs on this newly painted furniture do not even relate to the designs used on authentic traditional Tibetan furniture.
The panels on this page are recently done in Lhasa by Tibetan artists using traditional Tibetan themes. They are paintings on old doors or old wood. The supply of old painted panels from monasteries was largely exhausted several years ago, and these newly painted panels are the response of a very entrepreneurial people to continued demand. They sell for a fraction of the cost of an authentic old Tibetan door.
